Abandoned Development Projects
Software development can be a consuming and grueling process. It’s always fun and interesting to dive into a completely new project and begin working on it. Unfortunately, many of these projects never come into fruition. And though there certainly is something to be said for not giving up, there can also be a-lot said for simply letting things go. But when the dust settles, and your project is nowhere to be found, what can you take away from your abandon-ware?
Learning
Development is often clouded by high expectations. This is especially prevalent in projects done alone that don’t have an entire planning team behind them. But what was it that you got stuck on? Failing at engineering is quite simply the greatest way to learn engineering, and reflecting on your misconceptions and mistakes is a fantastic way to improve.
For these reasons, learning is among the most valuable product you can return from an abandoned project. Fortunately, a lot of this learning is usually done while creating the project. There is no good reason to recycle similar ideas, and create something that you know how to create. And in a significant project to which one feels affectionate, typically this is not the case at all.
